The Congress of Prasia (Spanish: Congreso de Prasia) is the legislative body of the government. The first elections to the Congress occured in 1825, two years after Prasia became an independent nation. The Prasian congress is bicameral, consisting of a House of Representatives, composed of 50 deputies, and a Senate, composed of 20 deputies. The Congress meets at the Palacio del Congreso in El Centro, San Luis.

HistoryEdit

The first elections to the Congress were held in 1825. Most of the congress members elected were independents, and Eduardo Santos Garza, an influential figure in the independence movement, commanded a majority of support from the deputies of the congress, and was therefore elected as Prime Minister.

The tradition of most of the deputies being elected as independents ended in the mid 1840s, when a larger amount of candidates from the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party were elected. These two parties had evolved from small, unofficial factions within Congress, and quickly established themselves as the main parties in Congress. These two parties continued to dominate Congress, and the rest of Prasian politics, until the Socialist Party rose to prominence in the 1930s, being born out of the trade unionist movement.

After this, a series of weak governments and coalitions followed, as the dominance of the three main parties meant one party could often not command a majority of support. However, the merger of the Socialist Party and the Liberal Party in 1973 meant that the left began to dominate Congress in the following years.

Meanwhile, in 1983 the Conservative Party rebranded itself into a more centrist, libertarian Conservative Centrist Party, which led to several right-wing breakaway groups establishing themselves within Congress over the next decade, most notably the Christian Democratic Party, who continue to have influence in the Congress to this day.
