Santiago Apóstol is the name given to the feast day commemorating St. James, observed officially in Zamora, Prasia on July 25th of every year. Celebrations of the festival in Prasia originated in the late 1500s, around the time that Zamora Island was first colonised by the Spanish. Many of these Spanish settlers came from Galicia and so a distinct culture, influenced by that of Galicia, emerged amongst early communities in Zamora. Therefore, the feast day has become one of the most important events in Zamora and is marked by parades and festivals being held in San Agustin and Pontecesures.
